Thinking about their future and outraged about the amount of produce that is wasted in Ontario each year, CALL interns Giulia and Salsa designed Eco Fair to educate the public on food sustainability and how your individual actions can impact the wellbeing of this planet.

Join us for talks from Yannick Beaudoin (David Suzuki Foundation) and Emily Christie (Second Harvest) as they inform us on food waste in Ontario and ways you can prevent it at home.

All food for the event was purchased from Imperfect Fresh eats, located on Danforth Avenue. A menu created with imperfect produce, preventing perfectly good food from going to waste and supporting local farmers.

"For this artwork, I decided to focus on pollution, as well as issues involving plastic bags. I
purposely shaped the plastic bags to appear like smoke to surround the parrot, who is made out
of more sustainable material such as newspaper, and a piece of a reusable bag for its beak.
Newspaper is more sustainable because it is easily decomposable and will take much less time
to decompose, unlike plastic bags. These plastic bags are not easily decomposable and can
even strangle wildlife such as birds.
We can all do our part by using reusable bags for our groceries and other items, instead of
using plastic bags. Additionally we can carpool, use public transit or even buy an electric car if
you are able to do so.
Let’s all do our part to keep our planet healthy!"

"When plastic is discarded – bottles, wrappers, packaging, etc. – it adds to the environment over
time by breaking down into tiny fragments which end up in our waterways. These tiny plastic
fragments – microplastics – have been discovered in the organs of wild animals and are small
enough that they filter through our drinking water system and end up in our own bodies. Recent
studies have shown that microplastics have been accumulating in the world’s waterways for
decades, and are one of the most common types of pollution in Ontario’s Great Lakes. With this
awareness, we can make intentional decisions as consumers to lessen our use of plastics –
especially single-use plastics such as water bottles – and be more mindful of recycling practices
and environmental action activities such as beach clean-up days. Plastic Bottle on Shoreline,
Lake Ontario depicts a discarded standard single-use water bottle on the shore of Lake Ontario
– specifically Toronto Island, where I spend half my year living on a houseboat. Living on the
water has made me aware of my plastics-use and I hope that this painting can remind us all to be a little more
mindful of our capability to keep waterways free of this kind of preventable pollution"
